First weekly wrap-up this school year. I can’t believe we already have 4 weeks under our belts.

We took a trip across to Greensboro, NC to visit family this weekend. 5 boys in one house – ages 8-15. It was crazy as usual.

We turned our trip home Monday into a field trip. We drove down the Blue Ridge Parkway from Boone, NC to Asheville stopping at many trails, overlooks, and historic sites along the way.

Friday we took a trip to downtown Nashville to get library cards. The main branch of the Nashville library is huge. It is so exciting to have this resource for school. The boys loaded up on fiction and non-fiction books and have been voluntarily spending time reading.

Saturday, Jack spend all day at Adventure Science Center with Dad while David stayed home to have an attitude adjustment.

After church Sunday, we spend a few hours exploring the Tennessee State Museum and stopped back by the library again for more books.

I haven’t had much success at getting started on this blog, so I thought a weekly wrap-up would be a good place to start.

This week was very organized school week. I too often “fly by the seat of my pants” which leaves me feeling as if we have not accomplished enough school work each day.

We have been reading parables during our Bible study time. I’ve enjoyed hearing the boys interpretations and seeing their progression from merely listening to me read and explain a passage when we began our school year, to thinking about and offering their own insights.

In history, we have reached the middle ages, kings, and castles. We have been taking a detour from our regular Sonlight materials to read about Vikings as well. This is such an exciting period of history for boys.

Jack is progressing slowly with his reading. I have to watch myself to make sure that I don’t offer the correct pronunciation of a word too quickly for him because he only wants to read the words that come easily and avoids applying himself.

I haven’t found a language arts curriculum for David that I really like yet. This is a difficult subject for me because it is so subjective. He is writing in his journal daily, reading his choice of books, practicing handwriting, and doing some Time4Learning activities.

Jack’s progress with Singapore Math has been wonderful. I think this is a curriculum that really suits him. It has just the right amount of work for him each day.

I am having David pick up the pace in ALEKS. I think the program is a good fit for him because it allows him to move on quickly when the problems come easily to him, however, he still does not apply himself when he doesn’t immediately understand the concept.

We are almost finished reading “A Cricket in Times Square.” Read aloud time is one of my favorite parts of the school day.

Its finally warm enough to be outside. Jack has moaned and groaned through our daily walks but he is getting exercise.

Rachel is pulling up and still tasting everything she can get her hands on. She is turning into a little girl and I am not ready for her to have a first birthday in a few weeks.

That’s our week. Read other weekly wrap-ups at one of my favorite sites Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.
